“On the bridge, you said your task on Vulcan was done.”

“True.”

“I don’t understand.” Kirk shifted from foot to foot, his agitation 
evident. “Nothing has changed.”

Spock looked beatific as he closed his eyes and gently shook his 
head. “The situation *has* changed, Jim.”

Kirk pulled at the front of his uniform shirt. “*This* hasn’t 
changed.” He pinched a fold of fabric at Spock’s shoulder. “*This* 
hasn’t changed. Three years ago, you told me that the situation was 
intolerable. Why . . . now . . . ?”

“Jim, the news came in from Starfleet Command four hours ago. The 
new uniform designs have been approved.”
